MUSIC MEDALS – MAKING MUSIC TOGETHER

Welcome to Music Medals – a new Associated Board initiative that supports group teaching. Music Medals recognise and reward the achievements of group-taught pupils from the early stages of learning an instrument - providing encouragement and motivation for their ongoing development. Music Medals are a new suite of assessments and supporting publications that focus on the needs of group instrumental teachers and their pupils.  Tailor-made for group-taught musicians from the earliest stages of learning, Music Medals aim to encourage and motivate young people to fulfil their potential in their chosen instrument by recognising and rewarding their achievements.

Levels and assessment:

There are five progressive levels of Medal assessment: Copper, Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. The Copper Medal is approachable for most pupils during their first year of study, while each subsequent Medal has been positioned broadly as an annual target.

Step-by-step, each Medal assessment covers the following core activities of group teaching:

•  playing with others (Ensemble)
•  playing solo (Solo)
•  musicianship skills (Option)

Whilst the assessments take place in groups - of equal or mixed ability - only one member of the group is assessed per Medal.  This ensures that full attention is given to their contribution and that individual, rather than the group's, attainment is rewarded.
